Horror themed restaurant in Edinburgh

"Frankenstein" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a unique restaurant and pub renowned for its unusual horror theme and vibrant atmosphere. It is housed in a former church building from the 19th century, whose Gothic architecture perfectly complements the establishment's dark aesthetic. Inspired by Mary Shelley's classic novel "Frankenstein" and the iconic 1931 film version featuring Boris Karloff, the restaurant offers an immersive experience that attracts both tourists and locals. Located in the heart of the Old Town, near the famous Royal Mile, it combines Scottish hospitality with a touch of spooky entertainment.

Unique experience at Frankenstein pub

The interior spans three floors, each with its own bar, and features a blend of Art Deco and steampunk design reminiscent of a mad scientist's laboratory. Plasma lights, Tesla coils, and flashes of lightning create an eerie ambiance, while classic black-and-white Frankenstein films flicker across large screens. The highlight of the visit is the regular "Monster Show," where an eight-foot-tall animatronic Frankenstein descends from the ceiling, accompanied by light effects, music, and soundscapes—an event that particularly delights guests in the evening. In the basement, there is the "Beer Cellar," a separate Oktoberfest-style area with long wooden tables, perfect for private events or large groups.

Scottish cuisine with a twist Edinburgh

Culinarily, "Frankenstein" offers a mix of British and American cuisine with a focus on fresh ingredients. Particularly popular are the "Haggis Fritters," crispy balls made from Scottish haggis, served with a spicy sauce and representing a regional specialty with a modern twist. The "Saucy Wings" are also a favorite—juicy chicken wings offered in various flavors, such as spicy or sweet, and perfect with a cold beer. In the Beer Cellar, German-inspired dishes like "Frankie’s Furters," a hearty bratwurst with sauerkraut, emphasize the rustic character of this area. For dessert, sweet treats like the "Black Forest Cake," with its chocolatey richness, round off the German theme.

Live events at Frankenstein restaurant

The drink selection is as diverse as the food. In addition to a selection of Scottish beers, including the house specialty "Frankenstein Pilsner," there are creative cocktails that resonate with the theme—such as the "Black Death," a dark drink with activated charcoal, inspired by the Great Fire of Edinburgh in 1824, or the "Monster," a potent mix of three rums with pineapple and crème de banana. The Beer Cellar features continental beers served in large steins, while the upper floors offer a broad range of spirits and wines. The drinks are often presented with a wink, contributing to the playful atmosphere.

Immersive dining experience Edinburgh Scotland

The vibe at "Frankenstein" is lively and versatile. During the day, it is a place for relaxed meals or a drink, while in the evening, it transforms into a party venue with live DJs, karaoke Sundays, and themed nights like "Rocky Horror Night." The staff is friendly and attentive, though service may be a bit slower during peak times. Families are welcome until early evening, after which the establishment becomes an adults-only zone. During the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it also serves as a venue for comedy shows, highlighting its versatility.

Instead of going there for a quick drink like I planned, I had the most amazing and fun time there! Great venue with a great selection of drinks and the vibes at the karaoke bar were fantastic! Highly recommend! You got a new fan from Germany!

Card only. You order at the bar and they add a service charge on!? Otherwise place is okay... Typical quirky tourist place. Marked down a bit due to lack of cash payment and making a fuss about removing service charge for pouring a pint.

Nice place to visit at nigth. Good performance when dance time arrives. Excellent ambience full of crazy people ready to party. Heard that the place has changed but when I lived in the city was the place to go with friends. Good memories and still hearing the music....

Did not try food while we were here. Wanted to stop in to check out such a unique place. The theme of the bar is really cool, we were also here on Halloween so that just added to it. The drinks were very good and fit in very well with the theme of the bar as well. Definitely worth checking out!!

Very interesting place! Reconverted church, with a Frankenstein theme. They have live music sometimes, and the decoration is quite cool. Prices are average for the area.
